Meet Mugisha Amos, a determined youth from Fort Portal whose story shows the transformative power of sustainable livelihoods and resilience.

A Bold Step Forward

In February 2025, Amos joined Eco Brixs' Fort Portal Community Buy Back Centre, a hub where local people can bring plastic and exchange it for income. Then the plastic is baled and transported to Masaka for recycling.

Like many youths in Uganda, Amos once faced financial instability and the pressure of supporting his siblings, including paying their school fees.

“Before, my life was not admirable. I was broke and couldn’t take care of my siblings or afford their education,” he recalls.

Everything changed when he saw plastic waste not as trash, but as opportunity.

Turning Waste into Opportunity 💚

Through working at Fort Portal's Buy Back Centre, Amos has become

part of a circular economy model that champions environmental conservation while creating green jobs. He now earns a stable monthly income, giving him dignity in his work and stability for his household.

“I advise people to look at plastic collection as a business, not as something to be ridiculed. I’m proud to say that my income now covers my bills and supports my family.”

Lessons from Amos

Amos’ story is a reminder that environmental action and social empowerment go hand in hand. Every plastic bottle collected is a step toward sustainability, opportunity, and community transformation.

For him, plastic collection isn't just cleaning up his local environment - it's empowering him to look after his family and access a good livelihood.
